BBM's gay sex scenes censored

"Italian gay rights' group Arcigay on Tuesday criticised the censorship of the award-winning cowboy movie, 'Brokeback Mountain', by the country's state television channel. The movie was shown on Rai2 on Monday without controversial gay sex scenes.
"We want to know who decided to show 'Brokeback Mountain' yesterday evening with such blatant, 1950s-style cuts," said Arcigay's president, Aurelio Mancuso.

"The film won the Golden Lion Award at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival, as well as three Oscars and four Golden Globes," said Mancuso.

"Who had the presumption to think an adult public could not handle the sight of kissing and intimacy between two men?"

So so sad...I don't know what to say. I was so happy to watch one of my most beloved movie on our national TV (I'm Italian, but you knew that already)and so furious after watching it mutilated in such a barbaric way.
These are not glorious times for my country...*shakes head*...

I didn't think Italian tv was so scared of gay sex scenes, Xenia!

Has it happened before with other films aside of BBM? It's unacceptable that intromission to the viewers' choice, imo. In Spain they don't censor sex scenes usually, but I think maybe a reason is some Mediterranean countries are less gay tolerant in a public area like tv, I don't know.

Oh Italy is a conservative country, Kendra...don't forget the Pope dwells in Rome. That means something.

Haha, The Pope and the Roman Vatican, it's true!
I think the Catholic tradition makes it more difficult for a whole acceptance of gay themes in a open way. There will be always controversial films, but people will want to watch the unrated versions ;)
